Who was Jeffrey Epstein?

Jeffrey Epstein was a US investor who was convicted of sex offenses and faced allegations of trafficking women and girls for sexual purposes. He later became a multimillionaire and associated with a network of wealthy individuals, influential politicians, and even royalty.

Epstein was arrested in July 2019 on federal charges of sex trafficking of minors in Florida and New York. He had already faced legal troubles in 2008, when he agreed to a controversial plea deal that allowed him to serve only 13 months in prison for similar offenses. The renewed scrutiny of his actions led to his arrest in 2019, but he died in his jail cell in August 2019, and his death was ruled a suicide.

Epstein Files: An overview

On December 19, 2025, in accordance with the Epstein Files Transparency Act, the Department of Justice released hundreds of thousands of documents relating to Jeffrey Epstein and his associates’ crimes. The “Epstein files” are a large collection of documents related to two criminal investigations into sex trafficking carried out by Epstein.

Following his death, debate erupted over the contents of these files, the individuals listed, and the circumstances surrounding their participation. By 2025, this and other probes had become a cause of contention during President Donald Trump’s second term, with even some of his most ardent supporters feeling betrayed by his administration’s refusal to reveal details about the Epstein case.
