According to authorities, at least one of the suspects pulled out a gun and demanded the victim’s property. The victim was then allegedly beaten by another suspect. The suspects seized the victim’s belongings and left in an SUV.

According to police, the 49-year-old refused to receive medical services. Area Three detectives are investigating the incident.

A video of the robbery showed the victim being pinned down and assaulted while passersby were close. Chicago police said that investigators are studying the footage and searching for the suspects, who remained at large Wednesday morning.

Business leaders in Fulton Market believe visible enforcement and technology are vital to public safety. According to Roger Romanelli, executive director of the Fulton Market Association, thieves are emboldened when they believe they will not be detected. He said that more police cameras may help track both crimes and getaway vehicles entering and departing the area.

Ald. Walter Burnett (27th) released the following statement about the attack:

“First and foremost, I’m grateful that there was no serious harm to the individual involved in this incident. When we were notified immediately, we ensured the 12th District was informed as well, and that officers responded promptly.

The safety of our constituents is a top priority for the 27th Ward. I have spoken with the 12th District Commander, Baier, who is aware of the incident, and I have been assured that the police presence will increase in the area. I am also told that these appear to be isolated events.

While this situation is concerning, we have full confidence in the Chicago Police Department to continue monitoring the area and taking appropriate action. Our focus remains on maintaining safety and supporting our community.”
