Official: Drunk Driver Was Going 105 Mph In Crash That Critically Injured Young Doctor

A drunk driver was going 105 mph when he blew a red light on the West Side and collided with another car, leaving a medical resident with life-threatening injuries, according to officials.

Joshua Orozco, 25, has been charged with aggravated DUI causing bodily harm for the June 25, 2025, crash at Washington Boulevard and Western Avenue. A 30-year-old medical resident at Stroger Hospital sustained a traumatic brain contusion and many facial fractures, according to a Chicago police report.

Orozco was allegedly driving his 2020 Jeep Grand Cherokee westbound on Washington Boulevard when he ran a red light at Western Avenue, colliding with the victim’s southbound Toyota Prius. According to the CPD investigation, data collected from Orozco’s airbag control module revealed that he was traveling around 105 mph at the time of the incident.

The impact threw the Prius around and sent parts flying off. According to the complaint, Orozco’s Jeep proceeded westbound until flipping and colliding with two trees, pulling one out of the ground and cutting another in half.

Orozco was examined and released with minor injuries. According to the report, he had a blood alcohol percentage of approximately .155, which is just under twice the legal driving limit. According to the report, after being read his Miranda rights, Orozco admitted to driving the Jeep Cherokee and that he had been drinking before to the incident. It’s unclear why the DUI charge was only filed this week.

Judge Rivanda Doss Beal refused the state’s request to hold Orozco until trial.

According to court documents, Orozco was on pretrial release for a misdemeanor weapons offense at the time of the crash. Prosecutors dropped the case in September.
