Florida Mom Indicted After Her 5-Year-Old Child’s Body Discovered On Waterline In Trash Bag

A Florida grand jury has indicted a mother for first-degree murder after discovering her 5-year-old son dead in a trash bag last month. Jalynda Karie Smith, 36, is now charged with first-degree murder and tampering with evidence following the March 26, 2026, ruling.

The discovery of the boy’s body at the waterline of Perdido Bay near Lillian Highway on February 6, 2026, marked the start of the investigation. According to investigators, the child—later identified as Jakaiden Smith—was discovered wrapped in blankets and towels inside a black trash bag.

At the time of his death, the child weighed only 20 pounds, which was almost one-third of his recorded weight just two months before. The medical examiners described the boy as “severely emaciated” and “malnourished.”

Escambia County Sheriff Chip Simmons reported that the boy’s aunt contacted authorities with concerns about her nephew’s safety shortly before they found the body.

“Our children deserve better than this tragedy,” Simmons said at a press event, adding that the infant looked to have died before being thrown.

Investigators also discovered that Smith’s phone and iPad had been factory reset just minutes before her arrest in a Gulf Breeze parking lot.

According to court records, Smith has a prior history with the Department of Children and Families, including a child neglect complaint in 2022 that was later dropped when she completed a parental skills course.

Smith is now being held in the Escambia County Jail without bond. Erin Ambrose, an assistant state attorney, is leading the prosecution on behalf of State Attorney Ginger Bowden Madden. Smith’s next court appearance, a docket day, is slated for May 19, 2026.
