A high wind warning has been set for three U.S. states on Sunday.
Wind gusts of up to 80 mph are possible on Sunday, April 26, with most winds ranging from 60 to 65 mph.
“Travel will be challenging, particularly for high-profile vehicles such as campers, vans, and tractor trailers. “Severe turbulence near the mountains will be hazardous for low-flying light aircraft,” the alert states.
“Winds will be especially hazardous at higher elevations, where the greatest winds are expected to occur. Drive carefully in these mountainous places. People driving high-profile vehicles should seriously consider delaying travel in these regions until the winds subside.”
The three US states bracing for severe winds are:
- New Mexico
- Texas
- Arkansas
Areas of New Mexico that could get hit hard include:
- Sacramento, Sunspot, Pinon, Mescalero, Mountain Park, Apache Summit, Timberon, Cloudcroft, and Mayhill
- Fort Bliss, Socorro, White Sands Range Headquarters, White Sands National Park, East and Northeast El Paso, and Chaparral
- Central Highlands, Eastern Lincoln County, South Central Highlands, South Central Mountains, Guadalupe County, Northeast Highlands, and Southwest Chaves County
- Sandia and Manzano Mountains including Edgewood, Estancia Valley, Eastern San Miguel County, and Quay County
Areas of Texas include:
- Guadalupe Mountains National Park, Queen, and Pine Springs
Areas of Arkansas include:
- Atka and Adak

“Remain in the lower levels of your home during the windstorm, and avoid windows. Watch for falling debris and tree limbs. Use caution if you must drive,” the warning adds.
