A Washington, D.C. man was sentenced to life in prison on Monday for fatally shooting a Baltimore man during an attempted robbery in Harbor East in 2023, according to the Baltimore City State’s Attorney’s Office.
Defendant Quontay Spinks received a life sentence for first-degree murder, use of a firearm in the commission of a violent crime, first-degree assault, attempted robbery with a deadly weapon, and first-degree attempted murder.
“I thank the court for handing down the maximum sentence under the plea agreement parameters for a defendant who terrorized our residents and visitors and ultimately took the life of Mr. Antonio Peoples,” State’s Attorney Ivan J. Bates stated in a press statement. “While nothing can undo this loss, I hope this sentence brings the family some sense of justice and closure.” I appreciate the Baltimore Police Department’s homicide detectives’ and ASA Gallo’s efforts to ensure responsibility following such brutality and sorrow.
The shooting took place on September 14, 2024, in the 700 block of Aliceanna Street, outside The Ruxton Restaurant in Harbor East.
According to investigators, the victim, 36-year-old Antonio Peoples, and his girlfriend were standing outside the restaurant when a dark-colored vehicle, subsequently identified as a Toyota Camry, drove up next to them.
Homicide detectives studied surveillance video, which showed multiple individuals exiting the vehicle and approaching the couple with weapons drawn.
The perpetrators attempted to rob them of their jewelry, and when Peoples resisted, gunshots broke out.
According to authorities, Peoples was able to disarm one of the perpetrators and return fire while wounded on the ground.
Peoples was struck numerous times and sent to Johns Hopkins Hospital, where he died. His partner was struck by a gunshot and treated for her injuries.
Crime scene technicians discovered dozens of bullet casings from various rifles, including 7.62 mm cartridge casings, .40 caliber casings, and 9 mm casings, as well as discharged projectiles and other evidence.
Detectives identified Spinks as a suspect after reviewing surveillance footage from both before and after the shooting, as well as ballistic and forensic evidence.
Authorities also received digital and mobile data that showed Spinks was near the site at the time of the shooting and then fled the area.
Spinks was arrested in Washington, D.C., on November 1, 2024.
Spinks confessed to attempting to rob Peoples of his jewelry and shooting him, according to investigators.
Spinks also admitted to being involved in many more violent incidents in Baltimore between September 12 and October 4, 2024.
Now, Spinks will spend the rest of his life in prison.
