An Indiana Democratic State Senate candidate was arrested while allegedly canvassing a neighborhood while high on cocaine, according to police, after officers say his erratic behavior and a brief struggle led to the discovery of drugs in his car.
Andrew Dezelan, 38, who is running for Senate District 31 in the Democratic primary on May 5, faces one count of cocaine possession and a misdemeanor count of resisting law enforcement after being arrested Sunday night, according to FOX59 Indianapolis.
Police responded to allegations of a man begging door-to-door around 8 p.m. in a Fishers neighborhood, according to WRTV. Officers found Dezelan sitting in his car at a local clubhouse, telling them he was canvassing.
According to a probable cause document acquired by the outlet, officers instantly saw symptoms that Dezelan was impaired, such as fast speaking, abnormal gestures, sweating, and constricted pupils.
When asked for identification, Dezelan allegedly became angry, digging through his truck, and said he had to leave. Police said he placed the car in reverse and reached into his pockets despite being told to halt.
Officers opened the car door and took him out. A fight ensued, with cops repeatedly forcing Dezelan to the ground before handcuffing him, according to authorities.
According to authorities, a search of the vehicle turned up a little bag of powder that tested positive for cocaine.
Dezelan was booked into Hamilton County Jail.
Dezelan is one of four candidates vying for the Democratic candidacy in the district, which includes sections of Fishers and Lawrence.
