Residents of Louisiana and Southern Mississippi should brace themselves for extreme heat on Monday, as temperatures soar and humidity causes heat index values to reach deadly levels. Much of the region, including Baton Rouge, New Orleans, and coastal locations, will see heat index readings of up to 112°F from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Monday.
The National Weather Service has issued a heat advisory for sections of southeast Louisiana and southern Mississippi, including major towns such as New Orleans, Baton Rouge, and Biloxi. The caution will remain in effect throughout the afternoon and evening on Monday.
The combination of strong heat and high humidity increases the risk of heat illness, particularly among vulnerable populations such as the elderly, children, and individuals with pre-existing health disorders. Officials advise citizens to stay hydrated, avoid vigorous outdoor activity, and seek refuge in air-conditioned areas.
In New Orleans, temperatures can reach the upper 90s with stifling humidity, making outdoor activities dangerous. Travelers should be aware of the dangers of heat exhaustion or heat stroke, especially along high-traffic routes such as I-10 and I-12. Additionally, people in Baton Rouge and further inland should restrict their sun exposure.
