National Weather Service (NWS) meteorologists have issued a slew of winter weather advisories and storm warnings for the Northeast, with up to 16 inches of snow forecast by Monday evening.
According to NWS meteorologist Eric Myskowski, the snowstorm began early Sunday morning, with heavier amounts occurring overnight, although snow will continue to fall throughout the day on Monday. He said that the snowfall totals are unusually high for this early in the season.
Why It Matters
Many of these states have already had their first snowfalls of the season. The winter storm warnings come as other sections of the United States, such as the West Coast and the Intermountain West, prepare for substantial snowfall. Other NWS offices are warning of the possibility of a wintry mix in areas of the Midwest, with millions more Americans expecting winter precipitation this week.
What to Know
As of Monday morning, NWS offices in Pennsylvania, New York, Vermont, and Maine had issued winter weather advisories. Offices in New York and Vermont issued severe winter storm warnings.
Snow has already fallen in several of these regions, and NWS meteorologists predict significant further snowfall before the end of the day.
The NWS Burlington, Vermont, forecast zones were projected to receive the most snowfall, including southeastern St. Lawrence, southern Franklin, western Clinton, Washington, Orleans, eastern Chittenden, eastern Franklin, and Lamoille counties.
“We expect moderate to severe snowfall. Additional snow accumulations of 3 to 8 inches will result in a storm total of 8 to 10 inches, with 10 to 16 inches probable on northwestern slopes, according to NWS Vermont’s winter storm warning.
Parts of New York were also bracing for further heavy snow, with NWS meteorologists in Albany saying that up to 14 inches might fall near and north of Route 28 in northern Herkimer County.
Gusty winds could exacerbate travel conditions, while blowing snow might reduce visibility in the morning.
Less but still significant snowfall is forecast elsewhere, with several inches of lake-effect snow possible in Pennsylvania and New York.
Southern Vermont and counties in the NWS Caribou, Maine, forecast region are anticipating several more inches of snowfall.
What Happens Next
Many of the winter weather alerts were slated to expire on Monday night, but some may last until Tuesday morning, depending on the region. People in the Northeast were warned to take local weather officials’ recommendations and travel with caution during the winter storms.
