Arctic Blast to Slam Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, Tennessee, and Texas as Dangerous Wind Chills Arrive in Early December

A significant Arctic blast is expected to sweep far into the South around December 6, with wind chills in the teens and low 20s over Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, Tennessee, and Texas. The most recent European model (ECMWF) predicts that the effect will be one of the most severe early-December cold surges in recent years, triggering warnings for millions across the region.

Meteorologists believe the European weather model has revealed a remarkable cold pattern, with temperatures matching midwinter in the Southern states. The ECMWF’s maps show deep purple and blue zones ranging from Texas to Georgia, with Mississippi and Alabama likely to have the most damaging wind chills, some as low as 12°F.

Forecasters warn that even if the model slightly overestimates, temperatures may be chilly enough to harm car batteries, outdoor pipes, and livestock. Tennessee and northern Georgia are also expected to experience subfreezing temperatures for many days.

Texas and Louisiana May Face Early Deep Freeze

Wind chills in Texas might range from 10°F to 15°F, particularly in the state’s north and center. Louisiana is also expected to drop into the teens, with meteorologists warning that this sort of cold could make travel and outdoor activities dangerous. In comparison, Florida will remain reasonably mild, hovering in the high 50s and low 60s, although even the Florida Panhandle may experience chilly temperatures.

Forecasters Emphasize Preparation

While scientists note that this is model data and not an official forecast, they believe the trends are clear: a widespread Arctic intrusion is becoming more plausible. Residents are encouraged to prepare by covering pets, plants, pipes, and vehicles before temperatures plummet. Utility companies may also issue warnings about excessive power usage as heating systems strain in the cold.

Meteorologists emphasize that future updates will determine how far south the Arctic air will go, but early signs point to a region-wide freeze beginning December 6.
