Travel continues to be dangerous across most of Iowa and Illinois Saturday afternoon, with snow and ice covering nearly all major highways, according to the National Weather Service in the Quad Cities.
According to the most recent assessment, Interstate 80 and neighboring routes are still sloppy or completely snow-covered, with little improvement forecast until the storm stops. Traffic cameras along I-80 filmed near-whiteout conditions Saturday afternoon, highlighting extensive traffic dangers.
Officials said that road personnel are actively plowing and treating main routes, but the sheer amount of snow and ice is hampering efforts. Drivers are advised to avoid unnecessary driving and to anticipate reduced visibility and icy surfaces on both highways and side roads.
The Iowa DOT 511 map shows “completely covered” conditions in extensive portions of eastern Iowa, reaching into northwestern Illinois, while neighboring states report similar circumstances as the storm moves east.
