Winter Weather Warning: Up to 20 Inches of Snow, 80 mph Winds Expected

On Tuesday, December 16, just when you thought the snow and wind had stopped, the National Weather Service (NWS) issued further winter weather warnings for the United States.

The NWS reported that at least two states may experience further severe weather later this week as heavy snow and strong winds continue to pummel the region.

“A winter storm blanketed the Northeast on Sunday, bringing the first measurable snowfall of the season for New York City,” a report from the Weather Channel said earlier this week. “Thousands lost power in New Jersey, and flights were delayed at the area’s major airports as some spots saw nearly 3 inches of snow.”

Heavy Snow and Dangerous Winds Expected in Parts of the U.S.

The NWS predicts significant precipitation and winds later this week in both Alaska and Washington.

“The High Wind Watch has been upgraded to a High Wind Warning for the Pacific Side of the Alaska Peninsula,” the NWS in Anchorage, Alaska warned in a post on Tuesday on X. “Wind gusts up to 80 mph are expected. High winds could move loose debris, damage property, and cause power outages.”

“A High Wind Watch has been issued for the Eastern Aleutians and portions of the Alaska Peninsula from 12 p.m. Tuesday to 6 a.m. Wednesday. A high wind watch means there is potential for a hazardous high wind event. Monitor the latest forecasts and warnings for updates on this situation. Fasten loose objects or shelter objects in a safe location prior to the onset of winds,” the NWS added.

According to the NWS, areas in Alaska and Washington should expect anywhere from a few inches to 20 inches more of snowfall.

Other Areas of the U.S. in for a Weather Change

While Alaska, Washington, and certain regions of the Northeast are being cautioned of dangerous snow and cold, the remainder of the United States is projected to warm up significantly through Christmas.

The NWS’ Climate Prediction Center projects that the United States will continue its warming trend until the end of the month. According to a graphic released by the Climate Prediction Center on Tuesday, December 16, 90% of the country will experience above-normal temperatures by the end of December.

“Areas in the Northern Plains that saw temperatures below zero this past weekend will now see highs soar into the 40s Tuesday and Wednesday. The warmth shifts east Wednesday through Friday as the next cold front moves into the Northern Tier, while the Southwest stays very warm,” the Weather Channel added in a separate report.
