An Arizona man was sentenced to ten years in prison for a deadly human smuggling crash in 2024, authorities reported on Tuesday.
According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Arizona, Samuel Lopez-Ozuna, 20, of Tucson previously pleaded guilty to transporting illegal aliens for profit, which resulted in death.
Prosecutors said Lopez-Ozuna sped away when Border Patrol officials attempted to pull him over near Arivaca, about 5 miles north of the US-Mexico border, on August 9, 2024. He was eighteen at the time.
Lopez-Ozuna’s Chevrolet Tahoe crashed and overturned shortly after he escaped. Seven undocumented migrants he was transporting into the nation were ejected out the van.
One person died, while three others were critically injured.
Lopez-Ozuna was charged with three counts relating to the deadly people smuggling collision, which could have resulted in a life sentence.
