A Florida couple was arrested this week after officials discovered what they called “appalling” living conditions in a home shared with three minor children.
Todd Joseph Lee and Lisa Marie Lee of Fernandina Beach were arrested on April 20 and charged with child neglect resulting in serious bodily harm after a thorough investigation by the Nassau County Sheriff’s Office.
The intervention began on April 19, when the Department of Children and Families (DCF) withdrew the children from their home owing to urgent medical and environmental safety concerns. Investigators discovered the home in a state of extreme filth.
Detectives observed urine accumulating on the floors, excrement splattered on the carpets and walls, and raw meat put out in various spots. The residence was also allegedly overrun with cockroaches and flies, with rubbish and unclean dishes littering the living areas.
Beyond the surroundings, the research uncovered a potentially fatal absence of medical oversight. One of the infants required specialist care, including medical ports that needed to be cleansed on a daily basis; however, detectives discovered that this care had been completely disregarded. The arrests followed multiple previous complaints filed by teachers who were concerned about the children’s well-being.
Sheriff Bill Leeper did not mince words when describing the scene his team encountered.
“The neglect and deplorable conditions these children endured are unacceptable,” Leeper stated. “We are committed to protecting our most vulnerable and will pursue criminal charges against those responsible for such appalling neglect.”
Both parents are currently being imprisoned in the Nassau County Jail. Authorities verified that the children are still in protective custody as the legal case against the Lees progresses.
