Ex-Teacher Sentenced To Prison After Shocking Classroom Betrayal

A former Los Angeles middle school teacher has been sentenced to prison for a case that prosecutors described as a major breach of trust involving a young student.

Colleen Jo Matarico, 44, appeared in court Monday wearing a blue jail uniform and handcuffs as a judge imposed a 10-year term.

She appeared in court after a 25-year teaching career, highlighting a severe decline.

Matarico had previously pleaded no contest to two felony charges involving a kid under the age of 14. In exchange for the plea, six further charges were dropped.

The case focused on conduct that prosecutors claimed began while the student was 13 years old and Matarico was still employed at John Burroughs Middle School.

During the inquiry, officials discovered that Matarico employed a unique nickname for the student, referring to him as her “crystal meth,” which became a focal point in the case.

When the punishment was read in court, Matarico’s response stood out among those present. She grinned, chuckled, and shook her head.

Her vocal comments at the hearing were limited.

“Good morning,” she said at the beginning of the proceedings.

She said, “Yes,” when asked if she comprehended the statement.

The judge also issued a rigorous no-contact order, preventing Matarico from contacting the victim—named in court filings as “Jeremiah”—in any way, including through third parties or internet communication.

Prosecutors stated that the incidents occurred between August and November 2025. Additional information submitted in court indicated behaviors and words that raised questions about professional limits and judgment.

Leonard Levine, Matarico’s attorney, described the situation as “very unfortunate” and stated that his client is “doing as well as she can.” He also stated that she is remorseful and recognizes the gravity of the situation.

Following the hearing, a bailiff led Matarico out of the courthouse to begin serving her sentence.

Officials highlighted that she had already served 616 days in Los Angeles County Jail, which will be counted against her total term behind bars.

The sentencing concludes the case, highlighting the repercussions of misbehavior in a position of trust.
