Narrow Stairs

Narrow Stairs

Benson Weeks

Death Cab for Cuties sixth studio album is overall their darkest, most dreary album. Focused around the ever growing topic in pop culture music, Love. Ben Gibbard sheds light on what love is to him. Contrary to previous albums where love was defined as watching those you love die. Love is redefined in this album as watching those you love grow and change, and always supporting them. Released in 2008, this album has ups and downs, twists and turns, and steps away from the classic Death Cab vibe. Right from the get go, there’s “Bixby Canyon Bridge” (5:16).  This song has a good progression, good dynamics, although it is a little drawn out, and the synths are unnecessary noise in my opinion. This song still has a good groove, and is quite enjoyable up until the last wall of noise. Next, “I Will Possess Your Heart” (8:25) is an absolute beast of a song, carried by Nick Harmers bassline that will make you want to sway back and forth to the melody. So groovy, there is a solid 4 minutes of instrumentals building up to a quiet roar. The repetition, however, is no problem; not for this masterpiece of a groove. It is clear what Death Cab was going for with this album, smooth rock melodies, with a kiss of Death Cab creativity. This idea is best reflected in “Grapevine Fires”. An offset beat and a melody of hmms and ahhs. Whereas the theme of the album is easiestly deciphered in “Talking Bird,” where Gibbard sings a song of support and love to one close to his heart, whilst still giving them a choice to leave. Often likened to those with alzheimers or disabilities that prevent them from living a “normal” life. These themes are reflected throughout the album. Loving those who are unable to love back and supporting those you love in their journeys. Giving your all to those you love. Topped off with a decent that is “The Ice is Getting Thinner” a song of two people trying to keep love in their relationship. Overall this album consists of solid melodies, catchy tunes, and an overall pleasant listening experience. I’d give this a Solid 8/10 listen to it rating.
