Dookie

Dookie

Benson Weeks, Writer

From Ripping Riffs to nasally vocals to groovin basslines, Billie Jo, Tre Cool and Mike Dirnt capture the 90s punk sound with classic Green Day fashion in their 3rd Studio album, Dookie. Released February of 1994, Dookie is now 26 years old, and it still holds up to this day. With singles “Longview”, “Basket Case” , a re-recorded version of “Welcome to Paradise,” originally released on the band’s previous album Kerplunk, “When I come around,” and “She” being released as singles and all still getting radio play time to this day. Songs like “Chump” and “Welcome to paradise” particularly stand out, featuring head banging breakdowns halfway through the song, that keep your ears intrigued, and your head banging. This album consists of themes pertaining to boredom, anxiety, and being a seemingly “unrelatable teenager”. “Do you have the time, to listen to me whine,” one quote that is quite relevant even to this day from the hit single “Basket Case” a song about dealing with anxiety and the modern day struggles. Each song gives another member of the band their time to shine, with single “Longview” opening with a deep thumping drum line, and Mike Dirnt’s grooving bass riffs that he allegedly wrote when he was “tripping on acid”. Drummer Tre Cool even getting in on the action with his full performance of bonus track “All by myself”. A song about well, being by yourself… Overall a memorable album, a piece in history selling over 16 million copies to this day. That’s mighty impressive, but just proves the longevity of the almighty Green Day.
