Heartland Thanksgiving Weekend Weather Alert: Arctic Blast and Snow Threat for Kansas, Nebraska & Missouri

The Heartland is bracing for a dramatic burst of winter weather through Thanksgiving weekend as Arctic air moves in from the northern Plains, bringing cold temperatures, strong winds, and sporadic snow showers from Nebraska to Missouri. The chilly surge may provide sloppy traffic conditions for those returning from vacation.

According to the National Weather Service offices in Omaha, Nebraska, and Pleasant Hill, Missouri, temperatures will be below normal between November 28 and December 4, with highs in the upper 20s to mid-30s and lows in the teens. The Climate Prediction Center reports a strong cold signal and above-normal precipitation, indicating that many waves of light snow may occur from late Saturday through Monday, particularly north of I-70.

According to the Missouri Department of Transportation, travelers should expect icy places on I-29, I-35, and I-70 if overnight temperatures drop below freezing during or after precipitation. Gusty northwest winds of 25–35 mph will make it seem even colder, with wind chills falling to single digits in the northern counties.

Drivers are advised to maintain emergency kits in their vehicles, allow extra travel time, and check current road conditions before departing. Residents should protect their pipes, pets, and outside plants as temperatures fall well below freezing in early next week.
