The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department said that a toddler was hospitalized and their grandfather was arrested after the child “overdosed” on the grandfather’s THC edibles.
Around 1 p.m. on Tuesday, police received a 911 call claiming that a 2-year-old had “overdosed” at an apartment on Dianella Way, just south of East Southport Road.
Officers arrived and discovered the child, who had consumed THC edibles at 3 or 4 a.m. and was “drowsy” afterward. However, when a family member got home around midday Tuesday, they discovered the toddler “breathing but unresponsive.”
The toddler was transported to a hospital and was listed in stable condition as of Thursday.
Detectives investigating child abuse were then brought in to assist. They quickly discovered that the youngster’s grandfather, 62-year-old Demetrius Barnes, was “aware the child likely ingested Barnes’ edibles overnight” but did not report it.
Barnes was arrested for abandonment of a dependent and interfering with the reporting of a crime. The Marion County prosecutor was scheduled to make the final charge determinations.
